Las Fotos Project

Author: Abby Tanori

Giving back is a major part of our company. We honor and value the communities we work in and want to do all we can to give back to them. One organization that is near and dear to our hearts is Las Fotos Project. Our partnership with Las Fotos Project is relatively new, but they have already made such an impact on us.
Las Fotos Project’s main goal is to continue the growth of the arts in Los Angeles by giving the younger female community a chance to try their hand at photography. They provide an outlet for high school aged womxn to express themselves through the camera lens. Las Fotos Project’s use of the term “womxn”, a phrase we have adopted through out this blog, is an example of their dedication to inclusivity. Their commitment to inclusivity is a pillar of their company. With LA being highly impacted and generally low-income, the arts in schools are being neglected by low funding. Las Fotos Project’s aim is to combat that by putting a camera in the hands of young womxn and allowing them to to test their photography skills. As a community based non-profit organization, Las Fotos Project works to elevate the voices of teenage girls from communities of color. Through a year-round program, they offer young womxn access to professional cameras, quality instruction and workshops that help them learn about different cultures, encourages them to explore their identity, helps them build leadership and advocacy skills, and strengthens their social and emotional well-being.
I came to know Las Fotos Project through my involvement in speaking panel’s they hosted. With my background as a photographer, I got the opportunity to speak with and share my knowledge of the industry with young female photographers hoping to make their mark on the world through their camera lens. It was so inspiring to meet and speak with these young womxn, many of whom came from the low income communities in LA, that were very eager and motivated to be able to express themselves through photography. More recently, we have become corporate sponsors of Las Fotos Project award event, as well as, I will be a part of their Host Committee for the event! Their award show is focused on highlighting female photographers that stand out to and inspire the young womxn that are a part of the Youth Advisory Committee. I will be partnered with a young womxn and we will nominate the photo that we are drawn to the most to be honored at the awards event. It is an honor to be chosen as a member of the Host Committee. I will sit alongside other amazing womxn that are prominent in the artistic industry.

It is important to take time out of our busy schedules to give back to the communities we live and work in. Giving back does not have to be just a monetary donations, but a donation of your time and expertise. Find a non-profit in your industry and offer your services to them free of charge. Donating your time to an organization is just as meaningful as a monetary donation. For me, being a part of Las Fotos Project is such a privilege and I cannot wait to fulfill my duties as a member of their Host Committee!
